This is the shortest day (and therefore longest night) of the year – otherwise known as the Winter Solstice. In many traditions this period holds great import as the turning point in this season. They talk about the power of the darkness – the womb – a time to gestate new ideas and rest back in quiet, internal contemplation and rejuvenation.
I am struck by how far we have strayed from this wonderful tradition of resting and nourishing ourselves in this season. Most people are currently in the holiday rat race – family, traditions, rules, presents, deadlines – the opposite of gathering around a fire in the darkness and sharing stories and perhaps a meal.
I wish you all some time today or this evening, so slow down and tune in – and enjoy!
