When Thoughts Won’t Stop

As promised, today’s blog post is about how to stop your thoughts from keeping you awake at night. This is something that can happen occasionally, when a major life issue is burning brightly, or it can be a regular occurrence.

In either case the most effective tool I have found is to empty my mind. And the primary way I do this is to write it all down so I don’t have to hold onto it inside my head. Journaling just before bed can be a wonderful practice to cultivate.

Or, if you wake up in the middle of the night, with your mind churning about an issue(s), then turn on a light and write down everything you can think of regarding that issue. Just let it pour out, free association style, not judging or editing as you go. Then, when you are done, set it aside, turn out the light and go back to sleep immediately.

These are my main tools for thoughts that won’t stop – and I have written some pretty awesome pieces from that deep dream inspiration state. Editing the next day works quite well, and I get to sleep the rest of the night!
