After dinner with a friend sitting at a picnic table,
Overlooking the lawn, pool and then ocean,
A tiny hummingbird perched on the tip of an aloe
Maybe fifteen feet away
Caught my eye and drew my attention.
In a resting moment
It scratched its neck with one tiny claw
Just like a dog would use its paw
Back and forth in rapid movements.
We were entranced.
Then the magic occurred.
A teeny tiny under feather
Came loose and floated on the breeze
Right toward us.
I slowly stretched out my arm in its direction
And the feather even more slowly
Came right down
Landing in the open palm of my hand.
Resting there in my palm
A tiny but magical gift
Gold from the hummingbird.
