Reclaiming Your Body:
Healing from Trauma and Awakening to Your Body’s Wisdom
At one level or another, traumatic experiences are a part of any life — from the emotional shock of a parent or peer’s careless words in childhood to intense physical injuries to life-threatening emergencies and/or assaults. Not only do these events take a toll on our psyches, in Reclaiming Your Body: Healing from Trauma and Awakening to Your Body’s Wisdom (New World Library, June 14, 2017), author Suzanne Scurlock-Durana explains how they they cut us off from the wisdom of our bodies as well.
“The body has its own language that is older and more primal than most of us realize,” writes Suzanne. “Most of us are conditioned at a very young age to turn off this inner guidance system of sensation, imagery, and inner knowing. Our priceless body wisdom is getting lost as our culture speeds up and becomes more technology driven. Compounding this issue is the fact that life’s traumas also cut us off from our body’s wisdom.”
Reclaiming Your Body empowers readers to reconnect with their body’s inherent guidance system. The book explains how unresolved trauma becomes lodged in our bodies, blocking the ability of its communication system to share its wisdom and strategies. This can cause us to flounder when making decisions, remain in unsafe or less-than-ideal situations, and/or end up living a life that truly isn’t ours — while the whole time our body is madly signaling us with the answers and solutions we seek.
Suzanne sets the stage for experiencing full body presence by offering ways to experience direct sensation. She also includes chapters for each main “wisdom area” of the body — the heart, gut, pelvis, legs and feet, bones, and brain — that explore each area’s unique role in the process of developing full-body presence.

Scurlock-Durana explains that many people think of their bodies as being obstinate and willful. To the contrary, she says, ‘Our bodies are naturally well-calibrated navigational systems once we learn how to listen to them and respect their assessments in any given moment.’ Learning how to tap into this inner wisdom can help unlock such vexing problems as chronic pain.

Reclaiming Your Body Review by Henry Reed of The Intuitive-Connections Network, July 2017
Do you remember the old book, The Wisdom of the Body, by Walter Cannon? It was first published in 1932. What have we learned since then? As the author points out, feelings and especially imagery are excellent tools for communicating with the body’s wisdom. The use of imagery was not well known back in Cannon’s day. It was in the late 60’s and early 70’s that labs began to discover that imagery, rather than verbal suggestion, was capable of influencing bodily functions. In Reclaiming Your Body the author goes way beyond Cannon’s premise to specify the kind of imagery that works best with various components of the body. She also provides specific healing strategies for various ailments. Throughout the book, she reminds us that as we learn to reconnect with the wisdom of our body, we are learning to reside in our true, intuitive selves. What could be better than that? Best to keep the book around for reference.
