Healing From the Core Workshops
What is “Healing from the Core”?
How is the Healing from the Core curriculum described?
This curriculum is based on the body as an innate navigational system. You’ll learn how to slow down time and deepen your connection with your body, your internal landscape so you can perceive the subtle-energy cues that are continually being transmitted to you. You will learn skills that reconnect you to innate energy resources that are rejuvenating and enable you to hold a strong, clear presence – creating what you want in your life with more ease.
You’ll discover how to discern when you’re becoming depleted, and learn valuable skills for how to replenish in the moment. This enables you to approach each client, each life situation with renewed energy and enthusiasm, and enjoy a long professional career as well as a rewarding life.
You’ll also learn the Five Principles of Full Body Presence that give you clear guidelines for optimal functioning in your world — how to make the most of every situation you encounter, be it professional or personal regardless of your modality or lifestyle.
Where can I find more written information about this topic?

What is the best way to get started in this curriculum as I wait to take my first course?
The first step to getting started in this curriculum is to read Full Body Presence and listen to the three audio explorations that accompany the text (available after book purchase as a free mp3 download; or order a CD). This is a prerequisite for all of the Healing From the Core courses and will give you a solid foundation to enter this curriculum. (See also the questions below for information about the Healing From the Core audio series and related materials.).
Is there a way for me to get this material if I cannot take a course?
Suzanne’s book Full Body Presence is a wonderful introduction. The Healing From the Core: A Journey Home to Ourselves comprehensive audio series is also a valuable way to learn the material if you live too far or have restricted access to a course. The audio series is made up of explorations — actual experiential work — to teach you the skills of grounding, therapeutic presence and healthy boundaries. To learn more about our support audio and DVD sets, see our Product page.
Why take a course if I have the audio series or have taken a webinar?
An in-person group experience offers you an expanded, resonant field in which to learn everything you need to know to be grounded and energetically full with healthy boundaries. In the classroom setting, much of the information is conveyed by the atmosphere in the room (one of open-hearted listening and a safe circle of support). The instructor’s guidance, the class interactions, daily question and answer, all provide material unavailable except in a classroom setting. Group exercises are an integral part of the class as well, which cannot be replicated alone. Click here for a list of current classes.

How long has this curriculum been offered and who can benefit from it?
This workshop series has been offered since 1995 nationally and internationally, and attended by a cross section of professionals, healthcare practitioners and the lay public. Professional audiences include business leaders as well as life and leadership coaches. (A specialized version of the curriculum for leaders and coaches is available.) Healthcare practitioners include physicians, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, psychotherapists, chiropractors, movement therapists, and massage therapists.
We have received thousands of course evaluations rating us as one of the most valuable courses in attendees’ continuing education higher learning experiences. Their feedback expressed the desire that this material have been included in their basic educational curriculum, as the skills they learned in this course have been so valuable to all aspects of their professional experience.
Many classes also include members of the lay public. These participants also rate this course high in the life skills needed to care for special needs children, aging parents or other challenging life circumstances. See below for how this curriculum has been valuable for differing populations of participants.
What is the specific value for Physical therapists and Occupational therapists?
This curriculum provides practical, clear, established skills to develop therapeutic presence. Developing therapeutic presence is an integral skill to maximize treatment outcomes for the patient. It is a skill that rarely has time to be discussed or practiced in academic settings. As a P.T. or O.T. it is imperative that evaluation of the patient be thorough and complete. Patients that are entering clinics with various medical diagnoses range dramatically with long and short term needs. Maximizing therapeutic presence allows the practitioner to fully create the treatment program that is specialized to meet the needs of the client. It teaches the practical skill such that whatever modality is being used, the therapeutic outcome is amplified and attained with greater ease.
In addition this curriculum includes movement re-education for those with pain or neurological dysfunction, breath techniques for those with compromised systems, as well as those dealing with stress, by working with practical labs, lecture and demonstration. The benefit to the therapist from the course directly effects their client outcomes as well as the side benefit of learning how to reduce burn out and maintain energy for themselves.
How does this curriculum strengthen the skills of practitioners of CranioSacral, Lymph, Visceral or the Brain Curriculum?
1. Our students say that the therapeutic presence and grounding they learned in the HFC curriculum make it much easier to feel the subtle rhythms of the CST, lymph, visceral and brain systems. The neutrality of their presence allows their palpation skills to be amplified and refined. Their proprioception gets sharper. They can feel more.
2. Another skill taught is how to have healthy boundaries without losing the connection that is so integral to doing good hands-on work.
3. Therapists report that their clients relax more under their touch because the therapist’s presence non-verbally signals that they are a steady, reliable resource for their healing process.
4. People who practice the skills learned in the HFC courses and audio series regularly report that they often end their day with more energy than they did previously.
How does this curriculum help the parents, teachers and therapists of special needs children?
The presence you learn in this curriculum gives you the skills to create and hold an atmosphere of safety and steadiness that calms the sensory input system of the special needs child. Not just autistic, but LD, ADD/ADHD, OCD, neuromuscular disorders, sensory integration issues, feeding disorders or reflux issues — all of these children have difficulties regulating their own sensory systems (be it touch, light, smell, sounds, movement) and therefore, the calmness of the therapist and their ability to radiate a diffuse, safe steadying presence enables the children’s systems to calm down and self-regulate. Then they can engage more fully with the therapist or teacher, reciprocal interactions are then possible in a totally new way. Tantrums can be met and diffused rather than escalating into a power struggle and affecting everyone else in the room with them.
The skills learned in HFC enable you, the teacher, parent or therapist to take the lead and stay in control in a less exhausting and more effective way. You learn to master your own therapeutic presence which in turn creates an environment that communicates a feeling of safety and new possibilities for the child.
When parents are stressed and reacting to their child’s normal dysfunctional behavior, and you as the therapist or teacher can model this therapeutic use of yourself (therapeutic presence) the parents get to see a new way to be with their child that is less exhausting and embarrassing.

How can this curriculum be valuable to general caregivers, or those care-giving elderly parents?
As a caregiver, this curriculum teaches you how to be grounded and present in such a way that you will feel clearer about what you need to do to take the best care possible of yourself and your loved ones. You will feel more of the internal signals that help you replenish yourself before you burn out. In the audio series as well as the courses, many skills are taught for replenishment – short-term and long-term.

How can this curriculum be valuable to teachers?
This course gives you multiple skills for creating a powerful, integrated presence. HFC graduates who are teachers report that people notice how much stronger their presence is in front of the room in a healthy, yet quiet way. In turn, this presence means that your students will naturally want to listen more, to trust what you are saying, and learn more easily from you.
How can this curriculum be valuable if you are an athlete?
Professional athletes who are HFC graduates report that they have a clearer sense of their bodies, their capabilities and possibilities. Injury reduction is the natural outcome of being able to hear your body’s signals to slow down or stop before exhaustion is reached. You are also more able to maximize your potential as an athlete when you know how to stay full energetically while competing. The HFC audio series and curriculum teach multiple ways to fill up and stay full energetically.
How can this curriculum be valuable if you are in an emergency situation or emergency care?
The HFC curriculum and audio series teaches grounding and presence skills enable the practitioner to remain calm, steady and more able to navigate through whatever the circumstances require. It will help you keep a clearer head and a wider scope of vision so you can see all your possibilities. HFC graduates report coming through harrowing life circumstances feeling less traumatized, depleted and more able to regain their ground and their life.

How can this curriculum be valuable if you are at a crossroads in your life, confused about your direction?
The HFC curriculum, as well as the Release and Renewal audio set, teach you specific skills for making important decisions; skills to help you discern deep into your heart and gut knowing — able to have a clearer more integrated conversation with all parts of yourself, which helps you to make wiser decisions.
Read more about clear decision making in Full Body Presence: Learning to Listen to Your Body’s Wisdom.
How can this curriculum be valuable if you are simply trying to manage an overly busy, stressful life?
The grounding and presence taught in this curriculum assist you in standing firm and centered, so that you are not being pulled in all directions. The skill of listening to your inner wisdom allows you to act from what you really need to do and feel deeply inspired to do, as well as knowing clearly what things in your life you can let go of. Skills in grounding and presence can help you drop into the present moment to enjoy your life, rather than feeling like you are rushing through it and hoping you’ll get to enjoy it later.

I am in mental health care and I find it much easier to put out energy for others, and not so easy to take care of myself. How can this course help me?
This pattern is rampant in all the helping professions. We can easily find ourselves stuck in “giving” mode and locked out of “receiving” mode. So how do we implement the philosophical underpinnings about healthy self-care that we teach our clients? This curriculum teaches the exact skillset needed to hold a space for others — gaining energy rather than losing it. Skills such as grounding, breathing in ways that are replenishing, moving in ways that are refilling, eating in nourishing ways, etc. are taught throughout our courses and comprehensive audio series.
I am an advanced bodyworker, and I want to get more out of my practice – to more consistently feel that deep connection that is possible. Can your curriculum help?
When we are fully connected and grounded, facilitating another person’s healing process can become a source of deep nurturing for ourselves, as well as our clients. The HFC curriculum and audio series teach the exact steps to learning full grounding, filling and connection with healthy boundaries. This then opens up many more possibilities for deep, resonant connection and healing to occur on a consistent basis.
I have many years and advanced courses under my belt, yet I feel like something is still missing – does the HFC curriculum address this?
It is necessary to include yourself, the therapist, in the equation of your client’s healing process. The outcome of any given therapeutic situation is deeply influenced by the therapist’s ability to hold a strong healing presence. This curriculum directly addresses the unseen, unspoken connection between therapist and client which occurs in every therapeutic situation – the connection that can deepen or lessen the success of the session.
Does my taking a Full Body Presence Overview course help me in any way with the FBP: Grounding and Healthy Boundaries course?
The information in the Overview will prepare you better for portions of the four day class, allowing you to refine and deepen your skills rather than hearing the information for the first time. Click here for a schedule of Overview classes.
What is the core class in this curriculum?
How is FBP: Skills to Energize Your Life different from FBP: Grounding & Healthy Boundaries and/or Developing and Deepening CranioSacral Presence?
Full Body Presence: Skills to Energize Your Life (HFSEL) is a weekend workshop that offers practical skills for maintaining healthy boundaries in one’s life, as well as tools for re-charging your system, enabling you to remain energized throughout the day, no matter what presents itself. This workshop is packed with useful skills for rejuvenating your mind, body and soul without taking a lot of time away from your busy life. It is designed for a broad spectrum of people and professionals, including teachers, parents and other caregivers, business managers and leaders, healthcare professionals and members of the lay public.
While the Full Body Presence: Grounding & Healthy Boundaries (FBP) workshop was originally designed with healthcare professionals in mind, today its audience includes a broad spectrum of people and professionals, including teachers, parents and other caregivers, business managers and leaders, healthcare professionals and members of the lay public. This course includes in-depth exploration of topics such as holding a healing space for another person, projection and shadow, the use of breath and movement for centering, and releasing impediments to full body presence.
Developing and Deepening CranioSacral Presence (DDCSP – Upledger Institute) is a version of FBP that is tailored to the specific needs of CranioSacral Therapists. This cutting edge workshop combines hands-on protocols and therapeutic presence, teaching therapists how to cultivate their personal navigational fields for more effective treatment outcomes for whatever client population a therapist may work with.
What are the prerequisites for HFC Advanced level trainings?

See below for more about this session.
Prerequisites for Tier Two Advanced level courses (HFAE1, HFAE2, HFAE3) include: Successful completion of Full Body Presence: Grounding & Healthy Boundaries and an individual one hour session with Instructor Suzanne Scurlock-Durana prior to the workshop, either by phone or in person (cost paid at time of session directly to the Instructor). See below for more about this session. Additionally, due to the advanced nature of this work, pre-approval through the Healing From the Core office is required for all participants who have not successfully attended SER1 through The Upledger Institute.
Click here for the HFC: Advanced Level course schedule.
I've registered for an Advanced course. What is the value will I receive from my pre-workshop session?
This session is provided to give you and your Instructor time to connect, and for her to talk with you about your hopes, wishes and dreams for the workshop, as well as any other information she may need in order to provide for you fully during those 5 days. Suzanne has found across the years that this session gives the instructor a much clearer sense of who you are and how to assist you in going deeper.
For those of you returning to an HFC Advanced level workshop, the pre-training session includes whatever you are working on right now in your life, so the Instructor is up to date on your healing process.
For those of you new to Advanced level courses, you will discuss basic information such as:
• Your age (we often celebrate birthdays)
• Your health history (What does the Instructor need to know to help you stay healthy?)
• Your home support system (Are you married, single, children, pets, extended family connections)
• What was your family of origin like? (Early messages)
• What healing work have you already done?
• What is your current work life about – are you in healthcare, or in another people oriented work situation? (like parenthood or teaching)
• What is your support system like when you go home at the end of the training? (Do you have a regular therapist/colleague/spouse who will be supportive of the changes you have made or are making?)
• Any other details you may want your Instructor to know in order to best support you.
All of these things help your Instructor to pace their work with you, to choose your small group members, and to know how to assist you in integrating whatever healing occurs (not too much or too fast, or if you are stuck at some point, to help you get unstuck before the course is done). All that in an hour (whew!), and sometimes she can even go into your inner landscape and do some work with whatever you are chewing on right now, in terms of your inner healing process.
This personal time with each participant allows the Instructor to work with you, rather than simply presenting information to you, during the course. This in turn supports a much more powerful group experience in each Advanced course.
For further information, contact the HFC office.
What is the difference between FBP and HFFBP?
I'm a professional life, leadership or executive coach. What is the difference between Healing From the Core and the curriculum for Coaches?
Full Body Presence for Coaches was originally offered in Reston, VA before being picked up by Georgetown University’s Institute for Transformational Leadership (ITL). It is a version of the Healing From the Core curriculum that is specifically tailored for coaches in that the terminology has been updated to reflect the coaching profession, and the program as a whole is trimmed such that only the information that directly benefits the coaching profession is presented.
This curriculum is in a transition and waiting period as ITL slowly builds and expands its programs in accordance with the guidelines of the graduate school. Ultimately, Full Body Presence for Coaches will be a 3-part Certificate program at ITL, with each a three- for four-day class available within one program year.
That said, the Healing From the Core curriculum is open to anyone, from all backgrounds and walks of life. Many coaches have successfully completed one or the other versions of the curricula and given us glowing reviews about how much the material has helped them in both their business and personal lives.

Suzanne has been on the faculty there since 1994, teaching Healing From the Core courses, CranioSacral therapy courses for The Upledger Institute, workshops for women and healing, as well as various workshops for the Esalen staff.
About our Products
I purchased Full Body Presence: Learning to Listen to Your Body's Wisdom. How do I complete the free download of the Audio Explorations?
To download the free audio tracks for this book, visit our Audio Explorations Download page and enter the password found at the end of Chapter One in your copy of Full Body Presence.
I don't know how to use MP3s. How can I get a copy of the Audio Explorations?
You can purchase a CD of the Audio Explorations on our website, or by calling our office at 703-620-4509. The CD is $8.99 USD plus applicable tax, shipping and handling. If you live within the U.S., you can send a check for $15.94 to Healing From the Core, 11110 Sunset Hills Rd., P.O. Box 2534, Reston, Virginia 20195 (total includes sales tax, shipping and handling.)
However, many people avoid this cost by downloading the free MP3s and burning them to CD, or asking for a friend’s help to do the same.
Why don't you include the Full Body Presence Audio Explorations CD in the back of the book (as you did with the first edition)?
The first edition of the book, which included the CD, was twice as expensive. When the second edition of Full Body Presence was published, the decision was made to cut the price in half and offer the Audio Explorations as a free MP3 download to keep the sale price of the book as low as possible, making it accessible to as many people as possible. It also makes it easier for individuals outside of the U.S. to obtain both the book and the accompanying audio without having to pay pricey shipping and import fees. The $8.99 plus shipping covers simply our cost for making the CD available.

What is the sound quality on the Continuum and the Healing Process DVD sets?
The sets from 2005 to 2012 were professionally filmed. With these sets, there is little issue with low volume or hearing speech.
The sets from 2000 to 2004 are archival quality footage. In these sets the volume may vary, and viewers may need to adjust it accordingly. People often ask us this question before they purchase a set, and our customers report back that while the volume may fluctuate, they were able to hear and use their DVD sets.
If you have ordered a DVD set and find that you cannot sufficiently hear it, mail it back to us and we will refund your full purchase amount.
I've downloaded audio files from your website. How do I use them/open them/get them on my device?
General Instructions for MP3 downloads:
We recommend that you save the files to a labeled folder on your computer, where you can find them later. If your computer saved them without allowing you to choose a file, look from them in your Downloads folder (or possibly on your Desktop) and move them to a location where you can find them.
• To play them on your desktop/laptop: Open your preferred music player (i.e. Windows Media, iTunes, etc.) Import the files into the program as you would any other music file (in many programs, go to File>Import, and follow the prompts). Once imported, add them to your playlists and enjoy them as you would any other audio file.
• To play them on your device (phone, MP3 player or tablet): Often times, modern portable devices will not allow you to download purchased MP3 (or .ZIP) files directly. Instead, download them to your desktop or laptop, and sync them to your device using your applicable media app (usually either via iTunes library, Windows Media Player, Android File Transfer, OneDrive, etc.) If you need help specific to your operating system and device, please email the HFC office and we will do our best to assist.
General Instructions for .ZIP files:
For large files and large collections of MP3 files, such as the 34 tracks in A Journey Home to Ourselves, we offer them in a compressed .ZIP format for a much easier and faster download. .ZIP is a universal compressed file format; once you have the file on your desktop, smartphone or tablet, use an extractor to decompress the files into full MP3s and add them to your media player (see General Instructions for MP3 downloads above).
Many iPads/tablets will not allow you to download MP3 or .ZIP files directly from the Internet, with the exception of some apps or downloads that are generated from within apps (not including Safari). If this is the case, follow the directions below on your regular pc or laptop and sync the files to your device using your preferred media app (see above).
Your smart phone or tablet may already come with a .ZIP extractor installed. If your device/computer does not have an extractor, visit the appropriate app store (Microsoft/Chrome/iTunes etc.) and download and install a .ZIP file extractor (search for “zip extractor” — you will probably have several free apps to choose from). For an iPhone or iPad, choose an app that will automatically add the extracted MP3s to iTunes for you. (.ZIP extractors – also known as unarchivers – are pre-installed on most desktop/laptop machines, or available for free online.)
Below are more tips for importing .ZIP files. When you download the files:
• As you know, these will save to your computer as .ZIP files. Open the folder to which they were downloaded (many computers automatically download to a “Downloads” folder).
• Click to open each. You’ll be asked to extract the files – Click Yes or Extract to extract the files. Save the extracted files (which will be MP3 files) to a folder of your preference.
• Once all the MP3 files are saved, open iTunes or your preferred media player and Import the files. (You can play them directly from within the folder, but is it often less complicated to Import them all at one time.)
• If desired, sync the MP3s to your preferred portable device, and Enjoy!
